SONG CHALLENGE DAY 25: Song by an artist no longer living

Writer: Anita ConnellAnita Connell

Updated: Aug 4, 2022

A tribute to George Rrurrambu Burarrwanga, musician and frontman of the Warumpi Band who died in 2007. The band originated in the Aboriginal settlement of Papunya in the central desert region of the Northern Territory in the early eighties. The band wrote, recorded and released the first rock song in an Aboriginal language, Jailanguru Pakarnu (Out From Jail), in 1983 and 'My Island Home' (covered here by Michael) is from their 1986 album, Go Bush. George Rrurrambu Burarrwanga was active in promoting reconciliation and cross-cultural understanding between black and white Australians throughout his life. For cultural reasons, upon his death he became referred to as George Burarrwanga.

We hope you enjoy this tribute. "My Island Home" Which artist and song would you pick today?

I. l.Ike Christine ANU’s singing of;Island Home. The Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwo’ole died at 38 years. I remember him well for his medley ‘SomewhereOver the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World’.
